Thanks for the Reminder Bushido
Guys,
Yes, it is true, Settlers is almost as addicting as AA. Probably more so since it takes 1/5 the time to play one game and practically anyone can play...even our wives...
Peace,
GS

Catan- one of the best + 2 cents
I agree, I have been a Catan fan for the last 5 years. It is a great game. There's a new expansion out- check it out at mayfairgames.com!!! When I go to GenCon, Catan and AA is all I play. Catan is great because there is plenty of strategy and tactics (though not as much as AA) especially with the expansions, yet simple to play. Women and wives love this game!!! I cannot tell you how many women love to play. The Catan games are probably some of the most clever games ever created. Its wide-range of popularity is continually growing!
Personally, chess is my favorite. I am a tournament player. Hold'em is probably the smartest choice in games since you have the ability to make good cash if your good. Many International Masters and even Grandmasters have quit chess to play in major hold'em tourneys because there is so much more money involved. But for strategy and tactics alone, chess cannot be beat. Hundreds of years attest to that!
Usually, when I talk games with people, I know I've hit a true hardcore gamer if they like to play Axis and Allies. There are different levels of gamers I find:
Social gamer: Apples to apples, various card games (not competitive), checkers etc.
Make me think a little gamer: Monopoly, Scrabble...
I want a challenge- let's spar!!!- gamer: chess (social player), Risk, Catan
I'm gonna break your mind and your ego gamer: Axis and Allies, any above in tournament form (ex. GenCon)
Axis and Allies is definitley for the pure stratigist and tactian. It has the complexity of chess, and it is a great team game!!! I'm geeked, stoked about this new Deluxe version. I can't wait to see this in tourney format also!!!
Deluxe AA tourney- 32 teams- 3 person teams= 96players!!! Or if it got to 64 teams- times 3= 192 players!!!-whoa!!!
Favorite games to play:
Chess (the king of games and the game of kings)
Settlers of Catan- all versions
Axis and Allies- all versions (except Minis)
Others- Texas Hold'em, Risk 2210, Monopoly and Shooting Pool

Ya..settlers is a cool game and the only "strategy game " I can get my wife to play too and its easy enough that the newest lazy genraration (teenagers) can even get into it and stay forcused on it the entire time as I can attest to since my son can't seem to play any game for more than an hour or two..unless is a video game! but he love settlers.

Guys,
Yeah, we play tons of Settlers at Origins and GEN CON between AA. My game is so worn out...
Another new game that is very awesome like Settlers is Dominion. A Rio Grande game. Check it out...

Thats so funny you guys play Settlers. I 'd try so hard to get my wife to play and LIKE A&A but it would never happen. So I tried Settlers and for about 4 years thats all we played. Just recently our new game kick is now Killer Bunnies. A very fun funny game.
