Origins 2009 Results

Post by SwampHQ on Mon 29 Jun 2009, 21:39

Well,

Back from Origins and beat. Soon as I can, I will get all the results up on the forum but in the meantime, a few quickies:

Congrats goes out to Mike Davis of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the co-winner in the AA 50 tourney as well as won the Guadalcanal tourney...great job Mike...

Also, if you have not heard, Origins numbers were very much down from last year. Almost 40% from what I hear as the official word....still I had a blast and look forward to GEN CON...

Peace, king

Its hard to say because Origins doesn't publish official attendance figures. My view on this year's was that it was less than last year, but above the dismal '07 numbers. I guess I didn't think it was too bad because nearly all of my events were sold out. The fiasco with event registration might have turned some people off. If the 'swag bag' was any indicator, corporate sponsorship is down as well. I think they just need better pre-con organization and marketing.

One of the GM's told me that they're really stressing event attendance, and if your event didn't meet a certain threshold they wouldn't have you back. I think tightening the variety of events is very counter productive and will only shrink attendance further.

They said attendance was down only 18%...

The Game Manufacturer’s Association (GAMA) has announced that attendance at the Origins Game Fair, held in Columbus over the June 25-28 weekend, was down 18% from 2008 levels. GAMA announced attendance of 14,190 in 2008.

The composition of attendees also changed, with 16% growth in the number of day-pass tickets. GAMA said that the number of sponsors and of vendors in the exhibit hall were both up vs. 2008.
